Basic Business Clothing for Men
Seven basic business items for men:
1. Black loafers
Black loafers are a professional shoe that will work back with just about any business pant. They can also often be worn with nice jeans for dress down days like casual Fridays.
2. At least five versatile ties
Assuming you need to wear ties every day, it is a good idea to ensure you have at least five that work with more than one shirt. When selecting ties, hold them up against a few different colored shirts to see if they work with more than one color.
3. A minimum of 5 business shirts
It is generally a good idea to have on hand at least one business weeks’ worth of shirts. Over time it is a good idea to build upon this collection and have a few more up your sleeve. Ideally have a mix of colors so that you create a different appearance from day to day. A white shirt is truly a classic, but they require regular soaking to keep them white or they have to be replaced often.
4. A classic two or three button suit
If you can only afford one suit to begin with, it is often best to stick to a classic Black two or three button suit. A dark grey or Black pinstripe style will also work back with most shirts and ties.
5. Five pairs of business pants
Depending on what conditions you work in, pants can sometimes be worn more than once, but it is still a good idea to have five or more. Black, gray, and dark colored pinstripe styles are good basics to start with.
6. Lots of plain black socks
When you are wearing black shoes, you should partner them with Black socks. Always ensure you have lots of plain black socks on hand, otherwise you might be tempted to wear a pair of sports socks, or white socks because that’s all you have on hand. Although they are only visible at times, the wrong color socks can make you look unprofessional to at least some audiences.
7. Classic dark denim jeans
Whether it’s for casual dress days at work, or after work drinks, a classic pair of dark denim jeans is often necessary for work related pursuits.
Some other items to consider:
If you have any shirts that require cuff links, you will need a pair of cuff links. If you live in a cold climate you will also need a professional looking overcoat. Over time you may be invited to work related events that require other clothing like a polo shirt for golf, or a non-business dress shirt for a dinner meeting.
